The Van Vollenhoven Institute (VVI) and the Leiden University Institute for Area Studies (LIAS) have received a grant of the Leiden University Asian Modernities and Traditions project (AMT) to commence a new research and teaching trajectory on Law and Governance in China. We invite applications for a postdoctoral fellowship from August 2015 through July 2017. Our new colleague will conduct research on the development of rule of law and access to justice in China, preferably regarding the protection of citizens against the state; develop and submit a major comparative grant application related to this subject; and have limited teaching duties. Depending on performance and the availability of resources, the position may be converted to a temporary assistant professorship in fall 2017, with the possibility of conversion to a permanent position in due course. The postholder will be based at the VVI as a centre of socio-legal studies in Asia, Africa and the Middle East.
? Conducting research on the development of rule of law and access to justice in China, preferably regarding the protection of citizens against the state;
? Developing and submitting a major comparative research proposal (Horizon 2020; ERC; NWO) on different forms of citizen protection across Asia, including China;
? Developing and teaching (in year 2) one course on law and governance in modern China (BA or MA, depending on program needs), to be offered at LIAS, and one course on comparative law & governance (BA) at the Law Faculty;
? Organizing an international conference related to the research project in comparative perspective in 2017;
? Representation of the field to external audiences and media.
? A Master’s degree in Law and/or Social Sciences, with demonstrated interest in law, governance and development;
? A PhD in the general area of Law, Governance and Development in China;
? Familiarity with interdisciplinary socio-legal research methods and approaches;
? In-depth knowledge of state, law and society of China;
? A research and publication record that is commensurate with the career stage;
? Commitment to high-quality teaching practice;
? An excellent command of English and Chinese; knowledge of Dutch may be an advantage;
? Willingness to travel for field research;
? Ability to work in a team and willingness to support other activities of the VVI and the LIAS;
? Academic entrepreneurial spirit.

The Van Vollenhoven Institute for Law, Governance and Development (VVI) is part of Leiden Law School. The Institute seeks to advance knowledge of the formation and functioning of legal systems in the developing world and their effectiveness in contributing to good governance and development. In its research and teaching, VVI uses a socio-legal approach. The institute carries out research projects in Asia, Africa and in the Middle East. VVI staff teaches several thematic and regional courses for Dutch and foreign students. In addition, VVI provides advisory services and training courses to policy makers and practitioners.

The LIAS is committed to the integration of disciplinary and regional-historical perspectives, on a solid foundation of excellent language skills, and comprises a School of Asian Studies and a School of Middle-Eastern Studies. Current staffin Asian Studies have expertise in the fields of Anthropology, Archeology, Art & Visual Studies, Development Studies, Economics, Film Studies, History, International Relations, Language Pedagogy, Law, Linguistics, Literature, Material Culture Studies, Media Studies, Performance Studies, Philology, Philosophy, Political Studies, Religious Studies, and Sociology. Appointment will be from October 2015 through September 2017 (with a two months initial trial period). Salary range from € 2.476,- to € 3.908,- gross per month (pay scale 10, in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities).
Leiden University offers an attractive benefits package with additional holiday (8%) and end- of-year bonuses(8.3 %), training and career development and sabbatical leave. Candidates from outside the Netherlands may be eligible for a substantial tax break.
